Krispy Kreme (DNUT) plans to expand in the New York metro area over the next five years. The company announced a new franchise development agreement with Original Entrepreneurs LLC to open 33 Krispy Kreme shops to expand the brand's presence in one of the nation's largest consumer markets.
The shops will be developed in New York City and the surrounding region, including Long Island and New Jersey. The Original Entrepreneurs group, a longtime Krispy Kreme franchisee and experienced quick-service restaurant operator, currently operates 12 Krispy Kreme shops.
"This development agreement reflects our focus on capital-light franchise growth and enables us to expand with an operator that has deep expertise in building and operating Krispy Kreme shops in a competitive market," highlighted
Krispy Kreme's (DNUT) history began with one shop in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, in July 1937. It grew primarily across the Southeast before reaching New York City in 1996 and California in 1999. By January 2000, it had 144 shops in 27 states. Expansion accelerated after its IPO in 2000. By February 2004, Krispy Kreme operated 338 U.S. factory stores, including 73 opened during the preceding fiscal year. However, rapid growth proved unsustainable as more than 240 U.S. stores closed between 2004 and 2009, reversing much of that expansion. Today, Krispy Kreme’s (DNUT) website lists 361 U.S. shops, including franchised locations.
