Downstreaming drives 30 percent of national investment: Danantara

C. Halmahera, N. Maluku (ANTARA) - Indonesia’s downstream sector accounted for 30 percent of total national investment realization in the first semester of 2026, according to Danantara Investment Management Agency (BPI) Chief Executive Officer Rosan Roeslani.

Speaking at the groundbreaking and commercialization ceremony for 11 nickel downstream ecosystems and the inaugural export of electric vehicle (EV) batteries in the Weda Bay Industrial Area, North Maluku, Thursday, Rosan said the downstream sector's contribution has expanded significantly over the past two years.

"From the total investment, the downstream figure has increased in the last two years rising from 25 percent to reach 30 percent of total incoming investment," Rosan noted.

National investment realization reached Rp1,010.6 trillion (approximately US$56.46 billion) in the first half of 2026, marking a 7.2 percent year-on-year growth and absorbing over 1.4 million workers.

More than 75 percent of total downstream investment realization was directed outside Java, driving regional economic transformation.

Rosan noted that the processing industry now generates nearly half of North Maluku’s gross regional domestic product (GRDP), transitioning the region from a traditional mining base into a specialized industrial hub.

Driven by exports of processed nickel products, ferronickel, nickel matte, mixed sulfide precipitation, nickel sulfate and cobalt, North Maluku recorded a trade surplus of Rp31.1 trillion (US$1.74 billion) in 2025.

Rosan further outlined 10 strategic projects underway in the Indonesia Weda Bay Industrial Park (IWIP) with a cumulative investment value of US$10.2 billion.

Four projects worth US$3.4 billion have reached commercial and export operational status, while six projects valued at US$6.8 billion have entered the construction phase.

The six active construction developments cover nickel-based battery materials, electric vehicle battery electrolytes, aluminum electrolytes, electric heavy mining equipment and photovoltaic glass.

The entire 10-project ecosystem is projected to create more than 10,000 jobs upon completion.
