LASCOPA secures N26.2m for Ikeja Electric customers

Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA)

The Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency has secured N26.24m in refunds and credit adjustments for electricity consumers following complaints against Ikeja Electric Distribution Company between January and September 2026, a statement sighted by The PUNCH said.

The agency resolved 528 of 556 complaints received against the electricity distributor during the nine months, leaving 28 unresolved and recording a resolution rate of about 95 per cent.

The figures highlight the role of consumer complaints and regulatory mediation in securing redress for customers over disputes involving electricity services and billing.

LASCOPA’s Head of Complaints and Mediation, Yusuf Musiliu, said the agency reviewed complaints submitted through online and offline channels and convened meetings between Ikeja Electric officials and affected consumers to resolve disputes.

He said the monthly stakeholders’ parley provided a platform for consumers to present grievances, engage the distributor and reach mutually acceptable agreements.

Musiliu, who expressed satisfaction with the resolutions achieved through the process, urged aggrieved consumers to pursue formal channels rather than resort to self-help.

He advised them to provide supporting documents, including electricity bills and payment receipts, to aid investigations and speed up resolution.

The agency said its stakeholders’ meeting with Ikeja Electric holds on the last Thursday of every month, offering consumers an avenue to escalate unresolved complaints.

It urged residents facing disputes over billing, estimated charges, overbilling, electricity supply and other alleged unfair practices to report them promptly.

LASCOPA General Manager and Chief Executive Officer, Afolabi Solebo, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to consumer protection, transparency and accountability in the electricity distribution sector.

The agency advised consumers to report complaints through its toll-free helpline, 080 0005 2726, on weekdays, or by email at [email protected].

It said its interventions were in line with its mandate under the Lagos State Consumer Protection Law 2025, as amended.
