Nigerian Army regains control of X account two months after hacking

The Nigerian Army said it has regained control of its official X account more than two months after it was hacked.
The military said the account had been successfully restored following efforts to resolve the “unauthorised access” reported on 29 August.
In a statement on Sunday, Appolonia Anele, a colonel and acting spokesperson for the army, said administrative control of the account had been fully reinstated.
She said the account was now secured and would resume regular updates on the army’s activities, operations, achievements and institutional developments.
“The successful recovery underscores the Nigerian Army’s commitment to safeguarding its digital communication platforms, protecting the integrity of information and ensuring the continued use of credible and secure channels for public engagement,” Ms Anele said.
The army thanked Nigerians, media organisations and other stakeholders for their patience and support during the period the account was inaccessible.
It also acknowledged their cooperation in helping sustain access to credible information through its alternative official communication platforms.

The military urged members of the public to follow the restored account for timely and verified information about its activities.
It reaffirmed its commitment to strategic communication, public engagement and strengthening trust between the military and Nigerians.
The army did not explain the process of restoring the account, nor did it mention those responsible for the hacking.
