Stargate Invasion Promises All-Out War

Stargate has been one of science fiction's most beloved franchises for more than three decades, growing far beyond Roland Emmerich's original 1994 film into a sprawling universe reaching into every corner of media. Much of that legacy belongs to Stargate SG-1, which ran for 10 seasons and transformed the concept into a beloved television universe, eventually spawning Stargate Atlantis and giving Jason Momoa the spotlight in his early career, as well as Stargate Universe, additional movies, games, novels, and more.

Yet attempts to properly revive the franchise have repeatedly struggled to get off the ground. Stargate Origins, released as a short-form web series in 2018, remains its most recent live-action entry, while a much more ambitious Amazon MGM series from franchise veteran Martin Gero appeared ready to finally reopen the Gate.

Unfortunately, that project was canceled in June 2026 before filming could begin, once again leaving Stargate without a television future. However, there is still one project titled Stargate Invasion that longtime fans absolutely should not skip.

Stargate Invasion Is An Homage To The Franchise's Legacy

For Stargate fans looking for something completely different, Stargate Invasion is an ambitious total-conversion mod for Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion. The project reworks the space-based 4X strategy game around the Stargate universe, allowing players to develop an interstellar civilization, research technology, field enormous fleets, and wage wars using factions pulled directly from across the franchise.

Its scope is especially impressive because Stargate Invasion does not limit itself to a single show. SG-1 is heavily represented through the Tau'ri, Goa'uld, Asgard, Replicators, and Ori, while Stargate Atlantis contributes the Asurans, Wraith, and Travellers. The project's 2020 Wraith showcase listed the Tau'ri, Asurans, Goa'uld, and Wraith as enabled factions, with the Asgard still planned and the Replicators, Ori, and Travellers occupying or being considered for specialized non-playable roles.

There are even smaller touches from Stargate Universe, with one Goa'uld Ha'tak design used by the mod specifically based on the version seen during Universe Season 1, giving the project at least some appearances from the franchise's third major live-action series.

The result is essentially a giant Stargate sandbox combining decades of ships, civilizations, and technology into one strategy experience. An older downloadable build on ModDB focuses primarily on the Tau'ri, Asurans, and Goa'uld, while the project's public GitHub repository houses the broader mod files and installation instructions.

Invasion Is A Stargate Fan's Dream Come True

For longtime Stargate fans, Stargate Invasion is about as close to a dream project as the franchise currently has. Its biggest appeal is the sheer breadth of material it pulls together, effectively turning Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion into a playable tour through Stargate history. Fleets, factions, technology, and designs inspired by SG-1, Atlantis, and even Stargate Universe give players the opportunity to revisit multiple eras of the franchise within the same enormous strategy sandbox.

That makes the project especially valuable at a time when official Stargate releases remain relatively scarce. There has not been a major new television series for years, and recent attempts to bring the franchise back have once again stalled, leaving fans with few substantial new ways to engage with the universe. Stargate Invasion cannot replace a full-fledged new series or AAA video game, but it does offer something ambitious that will hopefully distract fans in the meantime.

Perhaps most importantly, the entire experience exists because of the dedication of Stargate fans themselves. Years of community development have transformed an existing strategy game into something specifically designed for people who know these ships, factions, and conflicts inside and out. Until the franchise finally receives another major release, Stargate Invasion looks like an essential stop for fans still waiting to step through the Gate again.
