Cheerios makes major change to cereal boxes after years of consumer complaints

Translate

Cheerios is giving its familiar cereal box an upgrade that could put an end to rolled-up bags, cereal clips and stale O's.

The General Mills brand has teamed up with Ziploc to introduce Cheerios with Ziploc PantrySeal, a resealable bag inside a traditional cereal box.

The new packaging is designed to open only partially across the top, creating a pour spout that can then be resealed to help keep cereal fresh.

The change comes after years of consumers asking for an easier way to close cereal bags, according to General Mills.

The company said Cheerios and Ziploc receive hundreds of thousands of requests, comments and reactions annually about cereal packaging.

A December 2025 survey conducted by consumer insights platform Suzy revealed that 90% of cereal eaters take additional steps to preserve freshness after opening a box, including using clips, clothespins and cereal containers.

"Cheerios with Ziploc PantrySeal takes a small, everyday cereal frustration and finally gives consumers the simple solution they've been asking for," Emilie Knox, vice president and business unit director for Cheerios at General Mills, said in a statement.

It's a frustration cereal fans have also aired on social media.

"Why don't cereal companies use Ziploc type bags?" one Reddit user asked in a 2024 post that received hundreds of upvotes.

Other users have questioned why resealable packaging has not become standard for cereal.

"They could of did this 30 years ago. People have been asking for ages," one Reddit user wrote earlier this year.

"Cheerios just solved one of the biggest childhood problems," another person wrote on X after learning the news.

The new PantrySeal differs from a traditional Ziploc bag. Its zipper-style closure stops partway across the top of the bag, leaving an opening designed to make pouring easier and reduce spills.

The packaging will initially be offered as an option for original Cheerios and Honey Nut Cheerios rather than replacing the traditional bags in all boxes.
