AI Roadmap designed for 5-year period to track tech change: Patria

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Communication and Digital Affairs Minister Nezar Patria explained that the National Artificial Intelligence Roadmap has been designed for a five-year, or medium-term, period so that policy can adapt to technological developments and emerging risks.

According to him, the rapid pace of AI development cannot be projected using an overly long policy framework, as the quick emergence of new technologies such as generative AI shows that AI capabilities can advance beyond expectations within a short period.

"AI progress is so fast and its development is so impressive, that if we set a policy of up to 10 years, we might not be able to make changes quickly enough in terms of regulation," Patria said in a statement received here on Thursday.

The deputy minister explained that the government designed the National AI Roadmap with a shorter timeframe so that policies can be evaluated and adjusted in line with technological developments.

The government is also preparing AI ethics regulations as part of the national governance framework.

"The 2026-2029 National AI Roadmap and AI ethics regulations are important instruments for building a responsible AI ecosystem," he explained.

The development of generative AI is one example of how technology can produce consequences that were previously difficult to predict.

AI's ability to generate text, images, audio, and various other forms of content is advancing very rapidly, while a number of AI decision-making processes still present challenges in terms of transparency.

"No one ever imagined that generative AI would be this powerful, or that it would produce so many unexpected and unimaginable consequences, even for its own developers," he said.

Therefore, he said that the government needs to build a framework that allows regulations to keep pace with technological change while upholding the principles of ethics, security, inclusivity, and public interest.

Within this framework, national AI development is aligned with the Indonesia Digital Vision 2045 Roadmap and the Golden Indonesia vision.

The National AI Roadmap is also aimed at ensuring that Indonesia does not merely become a user of technology, but has the foundation needed to develop and utilize AI domestically.
