Orengo backs Linda Mwananchi victory, calls for one opposition candidate

Translate

Siaya Governor James Orengo has welcomed the latest progress by the Linda Mwananchi Movement, reaffirming his support for opposition unity and calling for the identification of a single presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 General Election.

In a post on X on Thursday, October 1, Orengo said he remained committed to the broader opposition push for political change and supported the formation of a unified political vehicle.

“I support the struggle for change which cannot be achieved without unity and positive political action. We are participating in this journey with the launch of a political vehicle and remain committed to opposition unity and identification of one presidential candidate,” he wrote.

Orengo also praised the movement’s progress, declaring:

“We laud the Linda Mwananchi success story and remain steadfast. Aluta continua!”

Orengo’s position in Linda Mwananchi

Orengo’s statement comes amid questions over his position within Linda Mwananchi following recent developments in the movement.

The governor was absent from a Linda Mwananchi retreat where Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna was selected as the movement’s preferred presidential candidate and leader.

Orengo had also separately declared his intention to seek the presidency in 2027, raising questions about whether his ambitions could conflict with the movement’s decision to back Sifuna.

His latest statement, however, signals his continued support for the broader opposition unity project and the formation of a common political vehicle.

Orengo’s call for one presidential candidate also points to the ongoing discussions within opposition circles over how different aspirants and political formations could eventually coordinate ahead of the 2027 election.

Tribunal clears Linda Mwananchi name

Orengo’s statement came shortly after a legal development involving the movement’s proposed political party.

The Political Parties Disputes Tribunal ruled in favour of applicants seeking to reserve the name Linda Mwananchi Movement and its abbreviation, LLM.

The Office of the Registrar of Political Parties had rejected an application submitted on August 4, 2026, through a letter dated August 7. One of the reasons cited was the potential similarity between the proposed name and Liberty National Democratic Alliance (LINDA), a name that had previously been reserved.

The tribunal, chaired by Innocent Muganda, rejected the reasoning, finding that the earlier reservation of the LINDA name had already lapsed by operation of law before the Linda Mwananchi application was submitted.

The panel also found that the proposed names were sufficiently distinct and directed the Registrar of Political Parties to process the application within seven days in accordance with the law.

Opposition vehicle takes shape

The tribunal decision provides a legal step forward for the group as it works towards establishing a formal political vehicle.

For Linda Mwananchi, the process now moves into a wider political phase as its leaders seek to organise the movement, build a national network and address questions surrounding its eventual leadership and presidential candidate.
