A Dowen College swimmer, Jochebed Amos-Penda, clinched a gold, a silver and two bronze medals at the third edition of the NNPC-SNEPCo Interschool Swimming Competition at the Ikoyi Club 1938 in Lagos.

Amos-Penda competed in the girls’ 11-12 age category. She won gold in the 50-metre butterfly and silver in the 100-metre individual medley. She also took bronze in the 50-metre breaststroke and the 50-metre freestyle.

The competition attracted 17 schools and more than 280 swimmers from across the country.

In a statement on Thursday, Dowen College commended Amos-Penda and said it was confident that its other representatives, Dennis Imelekedi and Donald Olise, would do well in future competitions.

Olise, who competed in the boys’ 15-16 age category, finished first in his heats in the 50-metre freestyle and breaststroke. Imelekedi swam the 50-metre freestyle in the 13-14 age category.

Members of the Ikoyi Club 1938 and representatives of the sponsors, NNPC-SNEPCo, watched the event.

The company was led by its Communication Manager, Gladys Afam-Anadu, who represented the Managing Director. She commended the turnout and said she hoped the competition would promote swimming and nurture young talent across the country.

The Vice Chairman of the club’s Swimming Section, Babatunde Pearse, described the competition as an important platform for developing the next generation of swimmers.

“These are the swimmers of tomorrow, and they have done very well. We are delighted with the turnout and look forward to welcoming even more schools and swimmers next year,” Pearse said.

He added that continued sponsorship would help expand the competition and reach more young people.

The Chairman of the Swimming Section, Akinbulejo Onabolu, also praised the standard of competition and the performances of the young athletes. He said the section remained committed to developing swimming talent and creating more opportunities for young swimmers to compete.
