Permanent Change To Green Lantern Lore Announced By DC

DC teases a huge and potentially controversial change to the Green Lanterns' mythos. The Green Lanterns' comic book lore is elegantly simple compared to other sci-fi franchises. It's quite easy to grasp the concept of the Emotional Spectrum, which intuitively color-codes cosmic forces based on human concepts like green for willpower, yellow for fear, and violet for love. The Green Lanterns' timeline flows logically from the Guardians of the Universe creating the robotic Manhunters to the creation of a galaxy-spanning police force made up of organic heroes and powered by sentient rings.

Still, the Green Lanterns have been affected by several retcons that have missed the mark. The most famous controversy happened in the 1990s when Hal Jordan was turned into the heartless villain Parallax, a heel turn so drastic that DC later revealed that Parallax was actually a parasitic fear entity that had possessed Jordan. Similarly, after the Guardians were revealed to have orchestrated the death of Hal Jordan’s father just to guarantee Hal would inherit the power ring, DC gradually skirted around this twist, and Geoff Johns' Green Lantern: Secret Origin placed the last nail in its coffin.

Now, DC prepares to introduce an ambitious twist that promises to reinvent the very origins of the Green Lanterns.

DC Teases A Major Revamp Of Green Lantern Mythos

Scheduled for release on January 13, 2027, Green Lantern Corps #24 promises to overhaul DC's cosmic lore with the conclusion to the "First Light" arc. According to the issue's solicitation, the billions of lives saved by the Green Lantern Corps will be questioned and weighed against the life "one friendless child." All the active members of the new Corps, including the diverse Alpha Guardians who represent every part of the Emotional Spectrum, might see all previous galactic tensions to a boiling point, which might lead them to collide again over all the casualties they have ignored and all the collateral damage left in the wake of their countless battles.

Green Lantern Corps #24 also features the Flash and Green Arrow.

Green Lantern Corps #24's mysterious confrontation puts special focus on the Darkstars, the Corps' rivals in lethal planetary justice, who are fated to square off against John Stewart and Jessica Cruz's Alpha Guardians. The literal embodiment of death, Black Hand, and the primordial power of the Light of Life are directly in the crossfire, and the solicitation teases "the lives lost along the way," all of which suggests a new version of Blackest Night, at least in spirit. The aftermath of this conflict could lead the Lanterns to rethink how power rings choose their wielders and how justice is enforced across the sectors.

Green Lantern's Upcoming Retcon May Be Controversial

DC Is Introducing A Divisive Twist On Green Lantern Lore

Earth's Green Lanterns assemble in Green Lantern #23 cover

Green Lantern Corps #23's solicitation teases the revelation that the entire Emotional Spectrum derives its power from a single living being in the form of the "last child of Maltus." Apparently, every single ring construct and cosmic feat performed by all Lanterns has actually been fueled by the dormant power of a comatose child entity. If things are as they seem, the noble Guardians of the Universe may reveal their true faces as horrific cosmic parasites who drained a helpless infant for centuries to fuel their policing empire, and the Green Lantern Corps may never recover their heroic legacy.

This potential retcon would be a bold move, as it sounds like a left-field retcon from DC Comics' 1990s grimdark era. Forcing heroes like Hal Jordan, John Stewart, and Jessica Cruz to reckon with the fact that their entire superhero careers were built on child exploitation runs the risk of alienating readers who prefer the traditionally inspiring sci-fi heroism of the franchise. This twist could also introduce continuity headaches regarding the established origins of the Emotional Entities and all previous Green Lantern-centered comic events. However, there's also potential in this twist to breathe fresh life into the Green Lanterns' hierarchy and history.

What do you think about DC's Maltusian child tease?
