SAN ILDEFONSO, Ilocos Sur — A total of 32 leptospirosis cases, including one death, have been recorded in nearby Ilocos Norte this year, according to the Provincial Epidemiology Surveillance Unit (PESU).

Of the reported cases, 26 were classified as suspect cases, three as probable cases, and three as confirmed cases. One death was also recorded, based on data released by the PESU. The figures covered the so-called morbidity week 1-35 this year.

The Provincial Health Office of Ilocos Norte urged residents to take precautions, particularly when walking through flooded or wet areas that may have been contaminated.

Residents were advised to avoid wading through floodwaters whenever possible and to wear high-quality rubber boots and other protective gear when exposure to contaminated water is unavoidable.

Health officials also reminded residents to clean wounds and cover them with waterproof bandages before going outside to prevent bacteria from entering through cuts or open skin.

Upon returning home, residents should immediately wash their bodies with soap and clean water.

Leptospirosis symptoms may develop two to 30 days after exposure, with common symptoms including high fever, severe headache, red or inflamed eyes, vomiting, abdominal pain, and yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice).

Health authorities urged residents who develop these symptoms, particularly after possible exposure to contaminated floodwater, to seek medical attention promptly. /das
