Internet outages hit parts of PH as undersea cable goes offline

MANILA, Philippines — Several internet service providers (IPS) in the country are experiencing network issues and internet outages on Friday evening, Oct. 2.
According to the University of the Philippines Diliman Network Helpdesk, one of the undersea cable segments between the Philippines and Singapore is reportedly offline.

This caused disconnections and slow internet speeds in some platforms as most of the upstream IPS connect through these major information pipelines.

“Since most of our upstream ISPs connect through these major information pipelines, please expect increased latencies and intermittent performance, especially if the sites being accessed are hosted offshore,” it said in an advisory.
The outage tracking website, Downdetector.com, also reported increased complaints over several IPS due to internet connection issues.
Meanwhile, internet service provider Padecoinc said that the segment between Philippines and Hongkong is also down, which affects the “overall capacity and global internet connectivity.”

Globe Telecom also issued an advisory, saying that it is already working to restore normal internet services due to an encountered technical issue.
Although it did not specify whether its service disruptions may be caused by the same problem.

“Our Globe customers may experience slow internet access for both mobile and broadband services due to a technical issue,” Globe Telecom said.
Broadband service Coverage also said that it is coordinating with its technical support teams to restore internet access. /apl /mr
