‘The Conjuring’ is being turned into a Netflix game, set in a haunted English pub

The Conjuring universe is expanding, with a brand new story set to be told as an interactive Netflix game.

The Conjuring: Unspoken will be free-to-play for all Netflix subscribers when it launches October 13, with your mobile phone acting as the controller.

While The Conjuring movies focus paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warrer, Unspoken sees you controlling demonologist Francesca Noakes who’s been called to an old English pub, The Red Lionn.

“The Conjuring: Unspoken might actually be scarier than the movies because you’re an active participant,” reads a press release. The game starts when the grief-stricken Cooper family arrives at a centuries-old inn, and strange things start happening. “One failed séance later and things get a little hairy. As the haunting progresses, you’ll use your wits — and your smartphone — to free the Cooper family from the phantasmal grip of the grief-feeding demon Vinea and Florrie, a ghost out of English folklore.” Netflix claims the game is based on a true story.

Using your mobile phone, you scan the area with ghost hunting tools such as an electromagnetic field reader, an infrared camera and a spirit box for clues that’ll help you solve this mystery. You can also choose different dialogue options as you play through the game, which will change the course of the story.

Netflix have confirmed you don’t need to have seen any of The Conjuring movies to play Unspoken, but “if you’re in deep with the Warrens, you’ll get a lot more from the experience” as a “few familiar faces” pop up in the game. Knowing the backstory adds to the overall impact.”

The Conjuring: Unspoken is the latest interactive game that’s launched on Netflix. Earlier this year, Sadie Sink, Zoë Kravitz and Troy Baker starred in thriller-turned-horror Unhinged and an exclusive FIFA game also launched on the streamer.

Last year, Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery was turned into a party game for Netflix subscribers, with a host of other titles that can be played using your TV remote also added to the service.  Netflix Games boss Alian Tascan has said he wants to turn more Netflix IPs into video games, with Bridgerton, Stranger Things and One Piece top of his list.

Meanwhile, a The Conjuring prequel film and TV show are in the works following the box office success of the latest chapter The Conjuring: Last Rites.
