2026/27 Ghana League: Port City snatch late winner to deepen Karela United woes

Translate

Port City scored twice in the closing stages to secure a 2-1 victory over Karela United in their Ghana Premier League Matchweek Eight encounter on Sunday in Tamale.

Owusu Ansah scored the decisive goal in the 89th minute to hand the newly promoted side all three points after Iddi Mahfuz had briefly restored parity for the hosts.

The visitors broke the deadlock in the 77th minute when Owusu Ansah found the net to give Port City the advantage.

Karela responded nine minutes later, with Mahfuz scoring in the 86th minute to make it 1-1 and raise hopes of salvaging a point at home.

However, Port City struck again just three minutes later, as Owusu Ansah completed his brace to restore their lead and secure a crucial victory.

The result ends Karela United’s unbeaten home run this season and extends their losing streak to two matches.

The defeat leaves Karela 14th in the league standings with nine points from eight matches, having recorded three wins and five defeats without a draw.

Port City, meanwhile, return to winning ways after a draw and a defeat in their previous two matches.

The victory lifts the newly promoted side to fourth place with 14 points from eight games. They have now recorded four wins, two draws and two defeats.

Port City will hope to build on the important away victory as they seek to maintain their strong start to life in the top flight, while Karela will be eager to halt their slide in the coming fixtures.
