NFL commish Goodell agrees to 4-year extension

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has agreed to a new four-season extension that runs through the 2030 season, the league announced Sunday.

Goodell's contract will expire on March 31, 2031.

"Throughout the negotiation process, the Committee worked closely with an independent third-party compensation consultant and outside counsel to structure a deal that aligns Roger's compensation with the League's long-term interests and success. To that end, the agreement is heavily performance based, with more than 95% of the total compensation tied to Roger's and the NFL's performance measured against various metrics and at the discretion of the Compensation Committee," New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, the chairman of the compensation committee, said in a memo sent to teams.

"We believe we are very fortunate to have Roger at the helm for the next four years."

At the end of his newest deal, Goodell will be nearly 72 years old and will have served as NFL commissioner for 24 years.

The NFL's current collective bargaining agreement, which Goodell helped finalize in 2020, expires in March 2031, when Goodell's new extension will expire.

This is the fifth extension for Goodell, who took over for Paul Tagliabue on Sept. 1, 2006. Goodell's previous extensions came in 2009, 2012, 2017 and 2023.

NFL owners also have seen the value of their teams skyrocket during Goodell's tenure as commissioner. The Minnesota Vikings -- the last team to sell before Goodell took over in 2006 -- sold for $600 million. The Seattle Seahawks sold this year for a record $9.612 billion.
