Indian teen prodigy Anahat Singh became the first Indian women’s singles player to reach the final at the Asian Games, after winning her semifinal at the Nagoya Kinjo Futo Arena on Saturday.
The 18-year-old came from behind to beat World No.6 Satomi Watanabe of Japan 3-2 (9-11, 11-13, 12-10, 11-6, 11-3) in the semifinal to secure at least a silver medal in the discipline.
The World No.13 looked to have settled for bronze when she went two games and two match balls down against the higher-ranked Japanese.
She also suffered a hit to her face when she ran into Watanabe mid point, requiring medical attention after suffering a cut to her finger.
But, Anahat bounced back in Game 3, fighting back from the cusp of defeat, before riding on the momentum to overpower Watanabe in the final two games.
India’s best result in the competition before today was the bronze medal won by Dipika Pallikal (twice) and Joshna Chinappa.
This will be Anahat’s second squash medal at the Asian Games. She won a mixed doubles bronze medal partnering Abhay Singh in Hangzhou in 2023.
