Warning: this article contains spoilers from Marshals season 2 episode 1!Marshals season 2's premiere episode delivers on exactly what viewers have been waiting for throughout the hiatus, but ends by previewing the end of an era for Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes). Throughout the premiere, Kayce's focus was on rescuing his son, Tate (Brecken Merrill), after realizing he'd been kidnapped by Tom Weaver (Chris Mulkey). After coming into Marshals season 1 with Kayce and Tate having lost Monica (Kelsey Asbille) between Yellowstone's end and the spinoff's beginning, Kayce's defensive and protective nature has been pushed to the limit, especially with Tate growing older and finding more of a sense of independence.
With Marshals season 2 kicking off with Tate in danger, Kayce goes rogue and does what he needs to in order to save his son from a dangerous situation. Despite knowing that he has to abandon the rules and regulations he follows as a US Marshal in order to do so, Kayce doesn't seem to weigh the consequences of his actions as he heads into the line of fire. Thankfully, Tate comes through by episode's end, but the storyline doesn't find its way to a clean finish in the way viewers may have expected, instead stirring up some mixed emotions.
While the wholesome moments between Kayce and Tate are limited, seeing the father and son come home after Tate's kidnapping to the wreckage in their family home only makes it clear that things are going to change on Marshals.
The End Of Marshals Season 2's Premiere Foreshadows A New Era
As Kayce ends Marshals season 2's premiere cleaning up a mix of shattered glass and blood, finding an old photo of Monica after Tate reminds him that he's growing up fast, it's clear that things are changing, and quickly. While it's been clear that Marshals was set up as a fresh start for Kayce away from the ghosts of Dutton Ranch, the way the show has moved through its first season has set up an interesting shift for the father and son. Marshals season 2's premiere made it clear that the status quo isn't going to stick around for long.
With Kayce realizing that Tate is going to be 18 soon and, more likely than not, leaving the nest, his life is about to open up in front of him. On top of Kayce potentially being an empty nester in the coming year, his relationship with Andrea Cruz (Ash Santos), may be set back in motion now that she's chosen not to move to Washington, D.C. as expected. Marshals season 2 seeing Kayce quite literally clean up his wrecked past, Monica and all, is setting him up for a very different future as he moves into a new life phase.
Question 1 of 3
Kayce's Life Is Changing Once Again After Monica's Loss
The onus of Marshals was to move Kayce, one of the more consistent characters on Yellowstone, into a different space after major tragedy. As one of the most significant losses, if not the most significant, in Kayce's life, the grief that Kayce felt over Monica's loss was intense, and adapting to a new career while trying to navigate through that was a big part of Marshals season 1. As he's moved forward, Kayce's been able to metabolize his grief in ways, and it was a noticeable shift as the first season continued. Marshals season 2, however, tackles a different challenge.
Kayce is left to confront a reality that cannot be solved through action or force, which is the way he's chosen to confront his problems. Monica is gone, and the future he imagined with her no longer exists in the way he thought it would. With Marshals season 2 expected to push things further between Kayce and Andrea, the development between the characters could see him moving into a whole new part of his life. Saving Tate was a beginning Kayce was surely thankful for, but it underscores how much has already changed since Marshals began.
