GCL 2026: Alpine Pipers flex muscle with 15-3 win over American Gambits, move on top

With each passing day at the 2026 Global Chess League, Alpine APL Pipers are proving they are the team to beat. After Day 3, they lead the standings with 9 points courtesy of three wins from four games.

However, the day didn’t begin as planned for the Magnus Carlsen-led Pipers as they suffered their first loss of the season at the hands of Viswanathan Anand-led PBG Alaskan Knights on Monday.

Nino Batsiashvili continued her good form, taking down the experienced Koneru Humpy for her second straight win after beating Carissa Yip in the previous round, putting the Alaskans in the lead with three crucial points. After the Volodar Murzin vs Abhimanyu Mishra and Kateryna Lagno vs Divya Deshmukh games ended in draws, the Alaskans retained their lead in the match-up.

It was Yağız Kaan Erdoğmuş’s win over Vidit Gujrathi that sealed the game for the Alaskans, with the 15-year-old Turk flagging the Indian. By that time, the Icon board between two legends – Anand and Carlsen – had already heated up. After Anand held a slight advantage in the opening, Carlsen pulled back in the middle and endgame and started putting pressure on Anand. With time running out, Anand failed to keep up on his clock and lost the game, but his team had already won the match for him.

CheQ Mumba Masters, who won their first game the night before with a close 10-9 victory over Triveni Continental Kings, began their Monday with a second consecutive win, this time against Ganges Grandmasters. Wins from Pranesh M, Carissa Yip, and Bardiya Danesvar helped Mumba secure a dominant 12-3 victory.

The next game was between two crowd favourites: Carlsen’s Pipers and Javokhir Sindarov-led Fyers American Gambits. What was supposed to be a closely fought contest turned out to give one of the most one-sided results of the season, with Pipers steamrolling Gambits 15-3. The win gave them the biggest margin of victory and also displaced Gambits from the top of the points table.

It was Vidit, Humpy, and Murzin’s wins with the black pieces that gave Pipers 12 points from three games. Divya vs Bibisara Assaubayeva, Nihal Sarin vs Anish Giri, and Carlsen vs Sindarov on the Icon board all ended in draws.

The last game of the day finally brought something to cheer for Triveni Continental Kings, who had to wait three full days to taste their first win of the season. The most successful side in GCL history, having reached the finals on all three occasions and winning twice, prevailed over Knights with a convincing 11-6 win. Wei Yi, Alexandra Kosteniuk, and Aravindh Chithambaram’s wins came in handy for them.

Four teams – Mumba Masters, Gambits, Knights, and Grandmasters – are tied on 6 points. Kings are at the bottom with 3 points from four games. There are six more matches to go for each side.
