Confirmed: Former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder joins Stellenbosch again

Matsheke previously represented the Stellenbosch FC during the 2023/24 season. He was part of the squad that lifted the Carling Knockout trophy.

The midfielder played a key role in the final against TS Galaxy. He scored the winning penalty as the Maroons secured the trophy after a penalty shootout.

Matsheke made 12 appearances across all competitions during his first spell in the Winelands.

MATSHEKE’S JOURNEY BACK TO STELLENBOSCH

Born in Chiawelo, Soweto, Matsheke began his professional breakthrough within the youth structures of Kaizer Chiefs. He was promoted to the senior team during the 2020/21 season.

The midfielder then spent loan spells with Uthongathi FC and Moroka Swallows to gain more competitive experience. After leaving Kaizer Chiefs permanently, Matsheke joined Stellenbosch FC on a free transfer in October 2023.

His first spell at the club proved memorable on the pitch. He helped Stellenbosch FC win the 2023 Carling Knockout trophy after scoring the decisive penalty against TS Galaxy in the final shootout.

However, his time at the club ended abruptly in March 2024. Stellenbosch FC terminated his contract following an internal code of conduct transgression.

Matsheke subsequently moved through spells with Pretoria Callies and Kruger United before returning to top-flight football with Marumo Gallants during the 2025/26 season.

His stay at Marumo Gallants was short-lived. The midfielder eventually parted ways with the club by mutual agreement after falling out of the head coach’s long-term plans.

Now back at Stellenbosch FC, Matsheke has another opportunity to revive his career at the highest level of South African football.

MATSHEKE TARGETS MORE SUCCESS

Matsheke admitted that his return to Stellenbosch FC came as a surprise, but said he was delighted to be back. “It feels great to be back at Stellenbosch FC,” Matsheke said. “It was unexpected, but I am really happy to be here.”

The midfielder thanked the club and coach for giving him another opportunity. “I want to pick up where I left off on the field and help the team compete for more,” he added.

“I missed out on the opportunity to play in Africa last time, so there’s a bit of unfinished business, but this is a second chance for me to do more and achieve those goals.”

Matsheke will wear the No. 31 jersey during the new season. The midfielder could make his second Stellenbosch FC debut this weekend. The Maroons are scheduled to face Kruger United in the Betway Premiership.
