Recently-capped Italy international Alessandro Romano is beginning to attract interest from some of Europe’s biggest clubs, but Thursday’s reports claim that Inter have the former Switzerland youth star at the top of their wishlist in the event that Hakan Calhanoglu leaves the club this summer.
Gazzetta: Inter want Romano if Calhanoglu leaves, Stankovic could also be sold
20-year-old Romano is one of the early breakthrough stars of the 2026-27 Serie A season following his summer move to Cagliari on loan with an obligation to buy from Roma.
He has only made five Serie A appearances for his new club, but caught the eye with a goalscoring debut from central midfield, before earning a first call-up to Roberto Mancini’s Italy squad for the extra-long September-October international break.

Romano had switched his international allegiance from Switzerland, whom he represented at youth level, in September.
After picking up his first Italy cap in slightly disappointing circumstances in a 2-0 defeat against Belgium last week, Romano is attracting interest from some of Serie A’s biggest sides, as well as a few in the Premier League as well according to reports earlier this week.
Updates from La Gazzetta dello Sport on Thursday claim that Inter are particularly keen to add Romano to their ranks next summer, especially if Calhanoglu decides to leave the club.

Calhanoglu will be out of contract on June 30, has been linked with a move to either Galatasaray or Fenerbahce for several seasons and given that he is one of the team’s higher earners and given that he will turn 33 in February, the club might decide that this is the right time to allow the Turk to leave.
La Gazzetta dello Sport hints that Inter could potentially decide to sell Aleksandar Stankovic as well, given that he has not really had any opportunities with the Nerazzurri since returning from Club Brugge over the summer. There were reports during the summer transfer window that Premier League side Brentford had offered €40m for the 21-year-old’s services.
If both players leave, the chances of Inter bringing in a new midfielder will rise significantly, and La Gazzetta dello Sport reports that Romano is the man the Nerazzurri want.
