Oaxaca held its first Afro Guelaguetza in the coastal community of Chacahua Isla, bringing together 12 delegations to celebrate Afro-Mexican heritage through music, masked dances and traditional performances. The festival, known as La Rejunjuneada, gave Afro-Mexican communities a dedicated platform to showcase their cultural traditions, which also feature in the state’s larger annual Guelaguetza celebration. Officials described the event as an opportunity to recognize communities whose histories have long been overlooked, emphasizing the importance of rights, justice and cultural pride.
