US has struck Iranian targets in Strait of Hormuz, US official says

Translate

The US has conducted strikes on Iranian targets in the Strait of Hormuz, according to a US official.

Iranian state television reported that explosions were heard on Qeshm Island, which is an Iranian island in the strait.

The official, who was not authorised to comment publicly and spoke on the condition of anonymity, said the US had targeted "Iranians using surface-to-air missiles against US assets".

The strikes, which appeared to be limited as opposed to a full return to hostilities, came on the eve of the crucial American midterm elections.

President Donald Trump has previously said the US would not launch strikes on Iran before the midterms.

The unpopular Iran war and the resulting impact on US fuel prices and other parts of the economy has been a vulnerability for Republicans as they try to keep control of Congress.

Vice President JD Vance told reporters earlier on Monday, local time that he had just spoken to Mr Trump about talks with Iran and said that "the president and I both feel pretty good about the prospects for potentially coming to a negotiated settlement".
