FKA Twigs Freed From NDA After Settling Legal Battle With Shia LaBeouf

FKA twigs is finally done with Shia LaBeouf and freed from a deal that prevented her from discussing her experiences while in a relationship with the actor.

In a Monday court filing, FKA twigs, whose real name is Tahliah Barnett, sent notice to the Los Angeles Superior Court that she had settled her lawsuit with LaBeouf and asked the court to dismiss the case after he agreed to void a non-disclosure agreement.

“Twigs stood up for something larger than herself: female survivors of sexual abuse,” Mathew Rosengart, Barnett’s attorney, told Rolling Stone.

In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, Shawn Holley, a lawyer for LaBeouf, said he “wishes Twigs nothing but the best in her life and career and, to that end, has agreed to end their long-standing dispute . . . Twigs has spoken about this matter for years and there is now nothing to prevent her from continuing to do so.”

The conclusion of the legal battle comes six years after Barnett sued LaBeouf claiming sexual battery, assault, and infliction of emotional distress after the end of their relationship, which lasted from 2018 to 2019. The two had met on the set of Honey Boy. Barnett’s sexual battery lawsuit was settled by the two sides last year, but the courtroom conflict wasn’t over.

As part of the settlement, Barnett was tethered to the NDA. Months after the settlement, LaBeouf sought to pull Barnett into a legal proceeding, she claimed. LaBeouf had accused her of violating the agreement when she told the Hollywood Reporter “I wouldn’t say I feel safe” following the end of the prior lawsuit and mentioned women’s advocacy organizations, according to her court filings.

Barnett sued LaBeouf again in March and told the LA court that he was abusing the NDA and that it violated California’s law against agreements preventing people from discussing sexual abuse. The singer said LaBeouf was using the NDA in a “campaign of intimidation” against her, Billboard reported. LaBeouf denied the accusations in legal filings. Now, after months of litigation in the current lawsuit and years of court battles, Barnett is unchained from the NDA.

“This victory frees her to discuss her experience, advocate for other women who might be less privileged, and support the charitable causes of her choice,” Rosengart said to Rolling Stone.

In 2022, LaBeouf openly talked about the abuse without mentioning Barnett by name.
