Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a charm offensive for global investors at India’s top chip-industry event, drawing pledges from U.S. firms Applied Materials and Lam Research for billions of dollars in outlays.

Marking India’s audacious bid to win a seat at the global chip-making table, Modi touted the country’s vast pool of engineering graduates and semiconductor-friendly policies as assets international companies should take advantage of.

“The world urgently needs new and reliable locations for manufacturing,” Modi told the conference in New Delhi Thursday. “India is readying itself constantly.”
