A snake-eating king cobra had just taken its unusual meal to another level. In a garden in Karnataka, a nearly 12-foot-long king cobra was found in the process of swallowing a python, leaving the family who spotted it with a scene that looked almost unreal.The incident took place on Friday evening, September 11, in Kading, Tenkakarandur village in Belthangady taluk. According to reports by Mangalore Today, the family spotted the giant cobra in their garden and alerted local snake rescuer Ashok.But the most startling part came during the rescue.As the rescuer carefully worked to move the snake to safety, the king cobra regurgitated the python it had swallowed. The cobra was then safely captured and released in a forested area, according to the reports.

A king cobra eating a python is not as strange as it sounds

The image may be shocking, but the meal itself fits the king cobra's biology remarkably well.Unlike most snakes, king cobras are specialists in hunting other snakes. Their scientific genus name, Ophiophagus, essentially means “snake-eater”. Their diet can include both venomous and non-venomous snakes, and documented prey includes cobras, kraits, rat snakes and pythons.That makes the python less of an accidental meal and more of the kind of prey a king cobra is evolutionarily equipped to pursue.

The king cobra is also the world's longest venomous snake, with individuals capable of growing beyond five metres. Its size gives it an advantage when confronting other snakes, while its venom helps subdue prey before it is swallowed whole.

Why can a snake swallow another snake whole?

The answer lies partly in the extraordinary flexibility of a snake's skull.Snakes do not have jaws that are fused together like ours. Their highly flexible jaw structure allows them to stretch around prey that appears impossibly large compared with their heads.

Once the prey is subdued, the snake gradually works it into its mouth and down its throat.For a king cobra, this adaptation is particularly useful because its prey is often another long, flexible snake.And there is another surprising detail: king cobras can consume a very large meal and then go for extended periods without eating again. Their relatively slow metabolism means a successful hunt can provide a substantial energy reserve.

The python was not necessarily an easy opponent

A python is not helpless prey. Large pythons are among the few snakes capable of challenging a king cobra, and encounters between the two can be dangerous for both animals. The king cobra's advantage comes from being a specialised snake predator, but size and physical strength still matter.That is one reason the Karnataka rescue is more than a bizarre wildlife sighting. It captures a rarely witnessed part of the food chain: one of India's most formidable predators taking on another large snake in a battle for survival.The incident also shows why rescuers caution people against approaching such scenes themselves. A king cobra may normally avoid humans, but a snake that has been disturbed while feeding or being handled can become highly defensive.
