Orlando Pirates dethrone Kaizer Chiefs at the top of the log

Translate

The victory takes Orlando Pirates to the top of the Betway Premiership table after three matches.

ORLANDO PIRATES BREAK CHIPPA RESISTANCE

The Buccaneers controlled possession early on as Chippa United dropped into a deep defensive block. Oswin Appollis tested goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali inside the opening six minutes, but the Nigerian goalkeeper made a near-post save.

Appollis went close again in the 16th minute, with Nwabali once more equal to the effort. Deon Hotto then forced Nwabali into action from a free-kick, with the goalkeeper tipping the effort over the crossbar.

The Chilli Boys created occasional openings, with Sergio Kammies firing narrowly wide from 18 yards before Figuareido beat Kamogelo Sebelebele on the left flank. His cross was eventually cut out by Lebone Seema.

Orlando Pirates remained in control, but neither side could find the breakthrough before half-time.

SECOND HALF

The Buccaneers came out with greater attacking intent after the restart. Patrick Maswanganyi had an excellent opportunity in the 48th minute when he went one-on-one with Nwabali, but the goalkeeper made a crucial save with his foot.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 60th minute.

Gamphani Lungu unleashed a powerful effort that went through Nwabali’s hands to give Orlando Pirates the lead.

Four minutes later, the Betway Premiership champions doubled their advantage. Lebone Seema rose highest from a corner and powered a header into the net to make it 2-0.

THE CHAMPIONS FINISH THE JOB

Chippa United tried to respond, but Sipho Chaine kept the Buccaneers’ clean sheet intact in the 81st minute. The Bucs goalkeeper produced an excellent save to deny Dlamini’s free-kick and preserve the two-goal advantage.

The visitors then sealed the victory three minutes from time. Daniel Msendami pressed Boy Mohlometsi, won possession and finished to score his first goal for Orlando Pirates.

The final whistle confirmed a comprehensive 3-0 victory for the Buccaneers. The result gives Orlando Pirates another important three points and moves them to the summit of the Betway Premiership, ahead of Kaizer Chiefs.
