Trade Minister engages cement and battery firms to boost local manufacturing and jobs

Translate

The Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, has engaged three companies in the cement, battery and renewable energy sectors on measures to strengthen local manufacturing, increase the use of Ghanaian raw materials and create jobs.

The engagements, held on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, involved CIMPOR Cement Africa, Huaguang New Energy Battery Ghana and Zema New Energy Limited.

At a meeting with CIMPOR Cement Africa Chief Executive Officer, Yasin Tekinarslan, discussions centred on tax relief for the local production and use of calcined clay to reduce the country’s dependence on imported clinker.

The Minister welcomed initiatives that use locally available raw materials to support the production of affordable housing and help address Ghana’s housing deficit.

The proposed use of calcined clay could support efforts to reduce reliance on imported materials in cement production, while promoting the utilisation of Ghanaian resources.

Mrs Ofosu-Adjare also engaged Huaguang New Energy Battery Ghana on workers’ welfare and quality standards, reaffirming the government’s commitment to supporting local manufacturing.

During a separate meeting with Zema New Energy Limited, a producer of solar photovoltaic cells, the Minister urged greater local participation in the company’s operations.

She said stronger local participation would help promote job creation and business growth.

The engagements form part of the Ministry’s efforts to strengthen domestic industry, encourage the use of local raw materials and expand opportunities for Ghanaian businesses and workers.
