Diego Raposo’s stunning strike from outside the box proved to be the difference as Punjab FC beat Indian Super League champion, East Bengal, 1-0 in their IFA Shield match in Kolkata on Wednesday.

The Red-and-Gold Brigade, which fans turn up in numbers at the East Bengal Ground, started with a team mostly comprised of first-time regulars, including new signings Chris Ikonomidis and Diego Živulić. However, Punjab, which entered the match after a 7-0 win over Calcutta Customs, continued its red-hot form with a narrow win in its final group-stage match.

Both teams, with wins in their first group-stage match, had already secured a spot in the semifinals of the tournament.

Punjab FC will next face NorthEast United, while East Bengal will lock horns with arch-rival Mohun Bagan Super Giant to ascertain the final. Both semifinals are scheduled on October 2.
