A 2027 sci-fi horror movie war wherein two different releases will adapt the same franchise is now on the horizon for our film future, setting up what is sure to be a fascinating point of the next upcoming year. The world of horror has often leaned into sci-fi territory to great success, as stellar sci-fi horror movies like Alien, Event Horizon, and The Thing display in prime fashion.
However, that isn't to say more recent history hasn't also had a field day with making stories that combine futuristic tech or antagonists, and getting into truly unsettling territory. Newer terrifying delights like The Substance, Prey, Nope, and No One Will Save You serve to make this clear, since almost every year comes with its own sci-fi horror delight to enrapture and terrify audiences in equal measure.
Now, 2027 is set to be a fascinating year for this kind of film territory, as one of the biggest and best franchises of all time when it comes to truly creative storytelling is getting two different movie adaptations that are both reportedly set to be unveiled in this year, marking an unusual sort of film competition for the franchise's new film renditions.
There Are Two SCP Movies Now In The Works
The world of the SCP franchise - which deals with the beloved fictional SCP Foundation (short for Secure, Control, and Protect), and the work they do to protect the world and reality itself from just about every entity, paranormal phenomenon, and sinister machination under the sun - is a truly expansive one, thanks to the nature of the franchise being an open collaborative project of sorts, wherein countless creatives have lent their efforts to help craft with their own stories.
While this means naturally there is a huge variance of tones and subgenres the franchise explores, it generally finds itself within the horror and sci-fi realms most frequently, due to a combination of the inherent horror aspects of most of these supernatural figures and phenomena, and the often sci-fi-esque tools and measures developed in order to understand and restrain these entities so they don't get out of hand.
Interestingly enough, this expansive lore is set to come to film format not once but twice in the coming days and years. These have been announced in quick succession, as A24 confirmed the V/H/S series is set to get a release titled V/H/S: SCP, which will debut in 2027, and shortly after it was also revealed by NEON that the company will be behind another movie delving into the SCP Foundation, which is currently reportedly also looking towards a 2027 release date.
With the SCP Foundation having not had a wealth of major movies of this kind in its history thus far, this marks a fascinating unofficial competition of sorts for the two films, both in terms of which manages to adapt the lore of the universe best, and in terms of which pre-existing fans of the franchise and the creators within it feel is the more authentic take on the rich narrative landscape that has been crafted collaboratively over the years.
Why The Two SCP Movies Are Likely To Be Entirely Different
On paper, the prospect of two SCP movies releasing in 2027 does initially sound as though it's teeing the two films up to be too similar, and delve into much of the same territory during the same time period.
In effect, though, it already seems clear this won't be the case. In line with the rest of the V/H/S series, V/H/S: SCP looks as though it will be an anthology movie, with several found footage short stories combined together over the course of its run. This will likely allow the movie to delve into a truly wide range of the franchise's stories, or otherwise use the SCP Foundation framework to depict a range of truly surreal supernatural events that tie into the lore of the franchise.
While NEON also looks set to be taking the anthology approach, the sprawling nature of the SCP lore means it's more than likely that its own compiled story adaptations will be worlds apart from the V/H/S movie, and will be tonally different in many, many senses. The SCP Foundation's story roster already comprises everything from cartoons turned into reality-warping nightmares to an unkillable crocodilian entity that hates humanity, and the glorious range on display here should mean the two horror movies don't feel like they're the same film in just about every sense.
