‘Bridgerton’ Lady Violet Prequel Courts Netflix Series Pickup
Bridgerton will again go (further) into the past.
Netflix has picked up a limited series spinoff of its Regency-era romance series. Like 2023’s Queen Charlotte, the new show will focus on the younger days of a character from the main series — in this case, Lady Violet Bridgerton, the matriarch of the show’s central family.
The currently untitled series will chronicle the early life of Lady Violet (née Ledger) and tell the story of her romance with Viscount Edmund Bridgerton. No cast has been announced yet. Ruth Gemmell plays Violet in Bridgerton; Connie Jenkins-Greig played a younger version of the character in Queen Charlotte.
Bridgerton executive producer Shonda Rhimes and Nicholas Nardini (Queen Charlotte, Inventing Anna) are writers and showrunners on the prequel. They’ll executive produce with Tom Verica (who’s also set to direct) and Rhimes’ Shondaland partner Betsy Beers.
Bridgerton has been an enduring hit for Netflix since it premiered in 2020. The show’s first and third seasons rank among Netflix’s top 10 English-language series of all time (based on 13 weeks of worldwide viewing). Season four, which premiered in January, spent nine weeks on the streamer’s weekly top 10 charts. In the United States, season four had 10 weeks in Nielsen’s top 10 rankings of streaming original series, peaking with 3.37 billion minutes of watch time in late February.
Season five of the main series, focused on Francesca Bridgerton (Hannah Dodd) and Michaela Stirling (Masali Baduza), is currently in production. Netflix has renewed Bridgerton, which is based on novels by Julia Quinn, through a sixth season.
