‘Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Prestige’ is coming to IMAX cinemas in January

Translate

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of Christopher Nolan’s The Prestige, the film is returning to IMAX cinemas for a limited-time.

Released in 2006, The Prestige is set in Victorian England and follows two duelling magicians (Hugh Jackman, Christian Bale) as they try and best each other while attempting to discover each other’s secrets. Scarlett Johansson, Michael Caine and David Bowie as Nikola Tesla also star.

“The twisting, turning story that, like all great magic tricks, stays with you long after the final reveal. Robert Angier (Jackman), a charismatic showman, and Alfred Borden (Bale), a gifted illusionist, are two young, passionate magicians – friends and partners until one fateful night when their biggest trick goes terribly wrong,” reads a press release.

“Now the bitterest of enemies, they will stop at nothing to learn each other’s secrets. As their rivalry escalates into a total obsession full of deceit and sabotage, they risk everything to become the greatest magician of all time. But nothing is as it seems, so watch closely.”

The film reunited Nolan with Bale after the runaway success of Batman Begins, and was based on Christopher Priest’s 1995 science fiction novel of the same name. The Prestige received positive reviews from critics (it currently has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 77 per cent). It also grossed $109million from a $40million budget.

To celebrate 20 years since the mystery thriller was released, The Prestige is returning to cinemas. As part of the re-release, it’ll be available on IMAX screens. “I’m very excited to bring The Prestige back to the big screen and particularly thrilled to offer audiences the chance to see it on 70mm film, and on IMAX for the first time,” Nolan said in a statement.

Disney, who own the distribution rights for North America, have confirmed the film will hit US screens on January 29, 2027. Warner Bros. own the international rights and are yet to announce global release plans.

Earlier this year, The Odyssey became Nolan’s most successful film after it took $1.104billion (£819million) globally after nearly one month in cinemas, beating The Dark Knight Rises’ $1.085billion (£805.7million) box office. Earlier this month it was reported that The Odyssey has now taken more than $1.7billion.
