Netflix's binge-worthy 6-part thriller with "an unsolved murder" jumps into UK trending chart

Translate

A new Netflix thriller with an unsolved murder and a trap laid out for the elusive killer has jumped up the streamer's charts. Titled The Trap, this German crime series has quickly become a binging sensation in the UK, where it's currently at number 10 of the most-watched TV content.

An adaptation of the novel of the same name by Melanie Raabe, The Trap follows a reclusive author, Lisa Konrad (Friederike Becht), who's haunted by the murder of her younger sister, Anna (Josephine Thiesen), from a decade prior. Dealing with PTSD after having found Anna in a pool of blood, Lisa can still vividly remember the man she saw fleeing the scene.

When she thinks she recognises the same man on TV, she devises a dangerous plan to catch him.

As she starts writing a novel about her sister's case, Lisa's research into the mystery man who he refers to as "the monster" reveals he's called Robert Lenzen (Hans Löw) and is a journalist in Berlin.

The series has earned mixed reviews, with Decider calling it "enjoyable" and likening it to the multiple Harlan Coben adaptations available across streaming platforms.

"The basic idea behind The Trap is certainly interesting enough to keep us watching; we just wish the storytelling in this series was a bit cleaner and easier to follow than what the first episode showed us," their review reads.

Elsewhere, Ready Steady Cut branded the series "too twisty for its own good" though it argued that the two central performances make for a "decently unsettling thriller".

"There's a decently unsettling thriller here, bolstered by two strong performances and a solid psychological premise that, when it's left to work on its own terms, can be intermittently effective," their review reads, adding that the pacing "is a major problem" and might not be worth the investment.

The Trap is streaming on Netflix.
