Abhishek Sharma wasn't in his usual form as India took on West Indies in the 5th and final T20I against West Indies on Saturday. Rain played spoilsport in Bengaluru, prompting the organisers to reduce the contest to a 9-over per side game. While another spell of rain washed out the contest, India did have the opportunity to bat for 7.4 overs before the game was abandoned. In that period, opening batter Abhishek Sharma scored just 6 runs off 4 balls before being dismissed.
As pundits sat down to dissect Indian players' performances in the series, former batter Aakash Chopra highlighted a "misconception" that has developed over Abhishek's style of play.
"In the last game, when he didn't get much strike, he looked a bit scratchy. He didn't get any rhythm at all, and let's discount whatever happened in this game. So, he was a bit below par by his standards in the series, but that is also going to happen. That is another reality of the brand of cricket you play," Chopra said during a discussion on JioStar's 'Haier Cricket Live'.
Chopra highlighted how it is common for a player of Abhishek's style to incur soft dismissals. The high tempo of scoring runs, coupled with blazing strike rates, is bound to produce 'soft dismissals' at times. He said to expect firepower from Abhishek's bat is nothing but a "misconception".
"You will always find that there might be a series, like the one against Afghanistan recently, where he scored a hundred in one game and a 70 in another, but then there will be another series where he would have a soft dismissal in one game, then another soft dismissal, play one good innings, and then get dismissed by a good delivery in another. These things are going to happen. Anyone who plays at a strike rate of 200 is bound to have a few games like these. That he will keep getting runs consistently; that is our misconception," he said.
