Across 14 seasons of Blue Bloods, Tom Selleck's patriarch, Frank Reagan, was the head of the family and the NYPD all at once, but with Boston Blue entering its second season, the franchise has finally found his most solid replacement yet. As New York City's Police Commissioner, Frank was able to balance the high demands of the city's law enforcement efforts while continuing to be a pillar of strength for the Reagan family throughout Blue Bloods' run on CBS. When the hit series came to an unexpected close, spurring a spinoff with the Danny Reagan (Donnie Wahlberg) focused series Boston Blue, Frank faded into the background.

With appearances throughout Boston Blue season 1 from past franchise characters, many of Danny's relatives turned up throughout the season, visiting the new detective in his new Boston stomping grounds, but Frank wasn't one of them. While there were some personal tensions between Selleck and CBS after Blue Bloods somewhat abrupt and unexpected cancellation, there also wasn't enough time to bring Frank in for a substantial storyline in the show's first season, which had a lot of ground to cover over its 20-episode run. Despite missing Frank, Danny established himself within the BPD, illuminating his path ahead.

With Boston Blue season 2 kicking off with Danny in a new position both personally and professionally, the series is clearing the path for him to take on a different challenge. While nobody can truly replace Frank Reagan, Danny's journey on Boston Blue may be setting him up to try.

Although Danny was hesitant to accept the promotion offered to him in the premiere of Boston Blue season 2, he ultimately chose to move forward with becoming a detective sergeant. After talking things over with his partner Lena Silver (Sonequa Martin-Green), who's now also his subordinate, and getting a push toward continuing his family legacy, Danny chose to take on the challenge and rise the ranks of the BPD. While he was already experienced as a detective, Danny's new role pushes him to a higher rank, which means he's following in the Reagan family footsteps as he establishes his new life.

With Danny having passed the sergeant's exam on the first try, him getting the opportunity to move up wasn't necessarily a surprise for Boston Blue viewers. Still, his reaction to the news and the fact that there was potential to move up at all was unexpected. Danny, who's always been an ambitious and forward-thinking character, truly felt conflicted in the face of his relationship with Silver, who was nothing but encouraging. In taking on the promotion, Danny's confirmed to be following in Frank's lofty footsteps, even if he's doing so in a different place and on a different path.

Question 1 of 3

Why Danny Is Best Positioned To Continue The Reagan Legacy In The Police Force

While there are other Reagan family members who are still actively working within the NYPD, Danny is the best positioned to continue the Reagan legacy from his position in Boston, despite the conflict of interest between cities. Danny's temperament and experience give him the best chance of continuing the Reagan family legacy on, and with his consistent ability to remain professional in the face of danger, regardless of what's at stake, he's the most like his father in the line of fire. CBS has chosen to move forward with Danny's story on Boston Blue, which gives him a distinct leg up on carrying the family name forward.

Though other Reagans, like Danny's younger brother Jamie (Will Estes), will be joining Boston Blue for guest appearances this year, Danny's story has been at the center of the new series, and has been able to carry the show. Much like his father before him, Danny is able to be the focal point of the story while not detracting from the larger issues happening around him. As a character, Danny may not be as similar to Frank as some may hope, but he embodies the same spirit as his father before him, which makes him a great anchor for Boston Blue.
