Clayface Worldwide Box Office: How Much Does James Watkins’ DCU Horror Flick Need To Beat Superman, The Franchise’s Top-Grossing Hit?

James Gunn’s DCU is shrugging off Supergirl’s box office failure and preparing for its 3rd theatrical release. The film is eyeing a modest opening weekend, as we previously revealed, and it is once again raising the question of whether it could outshine Superman’s overall box office performance. The DCU debut movie won hearts and remains the highest-grossing in the newly formed DCU. Scroll below to find out the target it needs to beat Superman worldwide.

The DCU is now headed by James Gunn and Peter Safran. Due to Gunn’s association with Marvel Studios, many were skeptical about his hiring. He received a lot of backlash online for casting David Corenswet as Kal El instead of bringing Henry Cavill back in the role. But everyone went silent when the 2025 movie opened with solid numbers and eventually became a box-office hit.

How much will Clayface have to earn to beat Superman worldwide?

For the unversed, Superman, the first film in the new DCU, was directed by James Gunn himself. His Guardians of the Galaxy films in the MCU received a lot of love from the fans; hence, many had faith in him despite the backlash. The David Corenswet starrer Superman opened with $125 million at the North American box office. Globally, it collected $618.7 million against a reported budget of $225 million [via Box Office Mojo]. It was thus a box office success.

Box office summary of Superman

• Domestic – $354.2 million
• International – $264.5 million
• Worldwide – $618.7 million

Therefore, Clayface has a massive target to beat Superman as the new DCU‘s top-grossing movie worldwide. It must earn $620 million to surpass Superman at the worldwide box office comfortably. Given the buzz and popularity of this Batman villain, it must have an extraordinary run to surpass the James Gunn-helmed movie’s worldwide box office.

More about Clayface

According to early estimates, Clayface is on track to earn between $23 million and $33 million in its opening weekend in North America. The global opening numbers could rise to $50 million to $55 million. Therefore, it is not at all encouraging for the movie if it aims to beat Superman’s global haul.

Directed by James Atkins, the film follows Matt Hagen, a rising movie star who, after being brutally disfigured, volunteers to become a test subject in an experimental treatment designed to restore his original face. However, the procedure triggers horrifying psychological and physical side effects, ultimately transforming his body into living clay. Clayface will be released on October 23.
