"I'm Lost For Words": Lewis Hamilton Celebrates First Ferrari Pole

Lewis Hamilton was ecstatic after securing his first pole position for Ferrari at the Mexico City Grand Prix. The seven-time world champion ended a long wait for pole position, having last topped the qualifying timesheets at the 2023 Hungarian Grand Prix. Hamilton, 41, edged out his former teammate and Mercedes driver George Russell, while fellow Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc qualified third at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez. Speaking after claiming the 105th pole position of his career, the Briton was almost lost for words. "Wow! That felt great," he said immediately after the session. "That feels good. So happy. Oh man, I'm lost for words. It's been a really, really tough, challenging weekend.
"Obviously, in FP1, we had a rake running, and then we had the engine issue yesterday, which meant we were on the back foot. I didn't get to do a long run. But we've done a really good job with the set-up over the weekend.
"We've worked hard and learned a lot from the last race. It's so close between all of us. For example, in Q2, I didn't get my lap in at the beginning. I think the others had a new tyre at the start," he added.
Hamilton had previously taken pole in Mexico in 2016, and this latest achievement means the circuit has become the 22nd track at which he has secured more than one pole position.
The 41-year-old also became the oldest Formula One polesitter since Mario Andretti at the 1982 Italian Grand Prix.
Reflecting on the milestone, Hamilton said age had not diminished his motivation or passion for the sport.
"When there's a will, there's a way. I think it's all in the mind, honestly. For sure, you might feel a few aches and pains, but luckily I don't.
"I ice bath a lot and do all the different things you can do to try and keep yourself young and fit. But I love what I do. That love hasn't gone. I wake up every day thinking about it.
"I dream about it. And I've got this amazing support around the world that keeps me going. I hope they're happy with that today, and I hope I can deliver for them tomorrow," he added.
