Frieda, whose clients included Princess Diana and Joanna Lumley, was married to music superstar Lulu for more than a decade.
His death was announced with a post on his Instagram account on Tuesday evening.
'It is with heavy hearts that we share the news that our dear John passed away peacefully ….surrounded by his family,' it reads.
'John was more than a mentor to us; he was a true icon of the hair industry. He was the person who taught us everything, believed in us, and made us better.'
Frieda launched his first hair salon in his mid-20s before creating his Frizz Ease shampoo range.
He sold the brand to a Japanese company for £260m in 2002, when it was not far off becoming a household name.

The tribute to Frieda on Instagram continued: 'His talent and passion touched so many, and his legacy will live on in every single one of us. We will continue to do him proud.
'Our thoughts are with John's family and everyone who loved him. Rest in peace, John. You will be forever in our hearts.'
Frieda was pop singer and actress Lulu's second husband and they married at Hampstead Register Office in October 1976.
They shared one child together, Jordan.
The couple divorced in 1992, with Lulu saying of the split: 'That was a very painful time in my life.
'It was excruciating. I thought I was dying. I thought I would die without my last husband. Quite clearly, I survived.'
Frieda was born in London in 1951, before being privately educated at King's School in Harrow.
His father, Isidore, owned a hairdressing salon where he worked part-time while continuing with his studies.
Frieda based his shampoo brand around the idea that not all hair should be treated equally.
Heather Warnke, director of marketing for John Frieda, previously told Allure: 'No one even went so far as to categorise hair types by colour.
'Blondes have very specific needs that weren't being addressed in the category and John Frieda wanted to address that.
'After that was done, other research was completed to determine how products could be formulated to enhance specific hair colors.'
