Melaka polls: BN candidates must work harder to win, says Rauf

AYER KEROH: Barisan Nasional (BN) candidates contesting the Nov 14 Melaka election must work harder to secure victory in their respective constituencies.

Melaka BN chairman Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh said candidates entrusted to represent the coalition must prove their capabilities throughout the campaign.

"I hope those selected will work harder and more effectively to demonstrate their ability to win the seats they are contesting," he told a press conference after announcing BN's candidates at the Melaka International Trade Centre (MITC) here tonight.

Also present was BN chairman and Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, along with party leaders.

Rauf said new candidates had been selected to give fresh faces the opportunity to continue serving the people, particularly in constituencies identified by the party as needing a change.

He said candidates' track records were also considered in assessing whether incumbents could continue delivering on their responsibilities.

"We believe they can continue the various initiatives implemented during the previous term and introduce new agendas in the next term," he said.

BN announced 21 candidates, comprising eight newcomers and 13 incumbents.

Of the candidates, 18 are from Umno, two from MCA and one from MIC.

The remaining seven seats – Paya Rumput, Bukit Katil, Ayer Keroh, Kesidang, Kota Laksamana, Banda Hilir and Bemban – will be allocated to strategic partners working with BN in the election.
