SAZI SANDI: ‘IT UNIFIES US’
The Stormers performing Impi yamaStormer first made headlines in 2023
At the time, the club posted a video of players singing the Xhosa song, accompanied by the Ubumbo Legends, ahead of their first match of the season at DHL Stadium against La Rochelle.
The song is inspired by Impi, the iconic 1981 song by Johnny Clegg and his band Juluka, which tells the story of the Zulu people’s victory over British forces at the Battle of Isandlwana in 1879.
The Stormers adapted their fighting spirit into a team anthem, with Sazi Sandi becoming a familiar leader of the chant.
He said of the modern rugby warcry: “It’s great to cap off a game and a win. It unifies us and just gives us that grounding, that feeling that we all are together.
“We are saying, well done to the Impi of the Stormers, well done to the Stormers soldiers. It’s quite lekker to sing it after a win, because you went to war and came out on top.”
