A-GC rejects Zamri Vinoth's representation to review public mischief charge

KUALA LUMPUR: The Attorney-General's Chambers (A-GC) has rejected a representation by independent preacher Zamri Vinoth to review his charge of making statements likely to cause public mischief.

Deputy public prosecutor Nur Farhana Mohamad Poad informed the magistrate's court here today during case mention for the 42-year-old accused.

Nur Farhana said following the rejection of the preacher's representation, the prosecution requested the court to fix trial dates.

"We expect to call between six and seven prosecution witnesses to testify," she said.

Magistrate Faezahnoor Hassan fixed April 21 and 22 next year for the trial.

Zamri, whose full name is Muhammad Zamri Vinoth Kalimuthu, was previously charged with making a statement on his Facebook account under the name "Zamri Vinoth" that was likely to cause public mischief and induce an individual to commit an offence against public tranquillity.

According to the charge, the post was made at 12.22pm on Feb 3 and was later seen and heard by a 45-year-old man at a restaurant along Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman here.

The charge was framed under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum prison sentence of two years, a fine, or both upon conviction.

On March 17, Zamri pleaded not guilty to the charge and was granted bail of RM4,500 with one surety.

Defence counsel Nur Shafiqah Shafiyah Omar, when met outside the court, said the defence submitted the representation about three months ago to request the prosecution to review the charge or consider reducing the section.
