Jakarta (ANTARA) - Jakarta has been officially designated as the host for the 2027 World Cities Culture (WCC) Summit, a global network of cities that share research, ideas, and best practices regarding the role of culture in urban development.

The announcement was made by the founder of the World Cities Culture Forum (WCCF), Justine Simons OBE, during the closing ceremony of the 2026 World Cities Culture Summit at WITH Harajuku Hall in Tokyo, Japan, on Friday.

In an official statement received in Jakarta, the Deputy Governor of Jakarta, Rano Karno, affirmed that the city is prepared to welcome delegates from over 50 cities worldwide who will attend the forum next year.

"We are honored to have the opportunity to serve as the next host and to continue the spirit and initiatives fostered through the forum," he said.

Rano noted that Jakarta's selection was the result of a bid process that began in 2025.

The 2027 WCCF, which will coincide with Jakarta's 500th anniversary, offers the city a chance to reflect on its historical journey, strengthen its cultural identity, and chart a course for its future urban development.

"This is a moment to look back at our history, celebrate our cultural identity, and consider what kind of Jakarta we wish to leave as a legacy for future generations," Rano stated.

He emphasized that the trust placed in Jakarta to host the 2027 WCC Summit also serves as an opportunity to introduce the richness of Betawi culture to the international community.

As the cultural roots of Jakarta, Betawi traditions have evolved alongside diverse cultures from across the Indonesian archipelago. The fusion has shaped Jakarta's character as a dynamic, open, and creative city.

"This is a golden opportunity to showcase Betawi culture on the global stage. While the Betawi people represent the roots of Jakarta, the city also serves as a home for traditions from all corners of the archipelago," he said.

Rano hopes that the delegates will experience firsthand how this diversity coexists and serves as a wellspring for the city's creativity.

"We will prepare the best possible event, while also ensuring that the residents of Jakarta are involved and get to experience the benefits," he said.
