Ryan Murphy Says He Finished ‘Glee’ Reboot Script

After recently telling The Hollywood Reporter that he was seriously considering a Glee revival — delighting fans of the beloved Fox musical series everywhere — Murphy now says he has a finished script and around 10 of the original castmembers enthusiastic about the possibility.

“I just finished the script an hour ago. So, yeah, we have a script,” he told Entertainment Tonight on Thursday night.

“Brad [Falchuk] and Ian [Brennan] and I, who wrote all [of the] first two seasons, have written something,” he continued of his collaborators. “I’ve been in touch with around 10 of the original castmembers, and it’s very sweet — they all had a lot of questions, but they all were very enthusiastic about the idea. Nobody has read it. So I don’t know, we’ll see. I vowed to myself that I wanted to write a couple of them to see what people think, particularly the cast, because we were very close when we were making it.”

Murphy made the comments while promoting the new season of American Horror Story, which returns Thursday with the all-star season 13, and he said that getting so many AHS castmembers back for the upcoming season was what inspired him to want to revisit Glee. “Now I’m older and this made me excited for a Glee thing because it was like getting the band back together,” he added to ET.

Murphy had previously talked to THR about a possible Glee reboot, saying that “for many, many people now in their 20s, they grew up on that show and it meant something to them. The music meant something. So, let’s kick it around and see what we get. It’s always about the story for me. What’s the story? Do I want to tell the story now?”

Glee aired on Fox from 2009 to 2015 and followed teacher Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison) and his McKinley High School’s glee club. The series starred Lea Michele, Amber Riley, Dianna Agron, Chord Overstreet, Chris Colfer, Kevin McHale, Jenna Ushkowitz, Heather Morris, Harry Shum Jr., Darren Criss and Jane Lynch, as well as the late Cory Monteith, Naya Rivera and Mark Salling.

Also while talking AHS at Thursday night’s New York premiere, Murphy revealed what role Ariana Grande was set to play in the 13th season, before she bowed out due to her tour conflict. Grande was set to reprise her role as Chanel #2 from Scream Queens for the new season, marking a crossover that, initially, Murphy said he may want to do again in the future.

“At one point, I was going to have the Scream Queens come on to this [AHS] season, but Ariana was touring and I couldn’t make it work,” Murphy told THR. “But she was like, ‘I still want to do it! I just can’t be on tour.’ So I was like, ‘All right, let me think of it.’”

Grande starred on Scream Queens, the Fox horror-comedy co-created by Murphy, Falchuk and Brennan, for one season. The series ran for two seasons.

In a theme of the night, Murphy said he’s open to a Scream Queens revival, too: “Emma [Roberts] and I were talking about that yesterday. You know, they want me to do it. I don’t know. … Emma really wants to do it. I know Billie [Lourd] wants to do it. Lea [Michele] wants to do it. Ariana wants to do it and Glen [Powell], my favorite of all time,” he said.
