Bocchi the Rock! Manga Gets Anime Film in 2027

A teaser trailer announced on Sunday that a film adaptation of Aki Hamaji's four-panel manga Bocchi the Rock! will open next year. Eiga Bocchi the Rock! Hoshi no Ashiato (Bocchi the Rock! the Movie: Footprints of the Stars) adapts "Hoshi ni Tamukeru Ai no Hana," the special story from the end of the fifth manga volume which recounts a prologue about Nijika Ichiji's older sister Seika.

Shin Wakabayashi (Wonder Egg Priority) is directing the film at CloverWorks, and Erika Yoshida (Maebashi Witches, Trickster) is returning from the previous television anime to write the screenplay. Yukiko Horiguchi (K-ON!, Lucky Star, Tamako Market) is designing the characters.

Yen Press publishes the manga series in English and describes the story:
Bocchi finally takes the stage in English, and she's brought her best friend— crippling anxiety! Hitori Goto just wants to make friends, but the thought of approaching a stranger on her own makes her so nervous that she's spent the entirety of middle school teaching herself how to shred on the guitar—to moderately successful (albeit anonymous) YouTube fame—in the hopes of seeming cool enough for someone else to reach out to her instead. After bringing her guitar to school provokes zero interest, Hitori's just about ready to shrivel up and die...which is when Nijika Ijichi comes across her moping in a playground and begs her to fill in for her band's flaky guitarist for their first-ever live performance! It's like her wish came true...but does this most antisocial of introverts have what it takes to perform in front of real people?!

The manga previously inspired a television anime that premiered in October 2022. A concert announced in February 2025 that the television anime would have a second season with Yūsuke Yamamoto (Bocchi the Rock! assistant director, episode director) replacing Keiichirō Saitō as the director, and Keito Oda (Bocchi the Rock! key animator) joining Kerorira in designing the characters.

Bocchi the Rock! Re:, the first of the anime's two compilation films, opened in Japan on June 7, 2024. The film sold 140,000 tickets and earned 218,470,888 yen (about US$1.38 million) in its first three days. The second film, Bocchi the Rock! Re:Re:, opened on August 9, 2024.

Hamaji launched the Bocchi the Rock! manga in Houbunsha's Manga Time Kirara Max magazine in December 2017, and the series is ongoing. Houbunsha shipped the eighth compiled book volume on November 27. Yen Press shipped the seventh volume on November 11.
