Joburg water WARNING: Don’t drink tap water

Translate

Johannesburg Water has warned residents in parts of Bezuidenhout Valley not to use tap water until further notice amid concerns over its safety.

The warning follows damage to a water pipeline at the corner of 6th Street and 8th Avenue.

Although crews completed repairs on Wednesday night, 21 October, the utility has yet to confirm whether the water is safe for consumption.

JOHANNESBURG WATER ISSUES WARNING

According to a report, the pipeline was damaged when a tree stump fell onto it during excavation work.

A contractor was replacing a sewer pipe when the incident occurred.

Johannesburg Water subsequently isolated the affected section of the network and began testing water samples to establish whether the supply meets drinking water quality standards.

“Residents in the affected areas are advised not to use the water until further notice,” the utility said.

The warning affects sections of 8th Avenue at its intersections with:

  • 4th Street
  • 5th Street
  • 6th Street
  • 7th Street

Residents have been urged to avoid using tap water until Johannesburg Water confirms that it is safe.

WHEN WILL WATER BE RESTORED?

Johannesburg Water said the affected supply would remain isolated until laboratory tests confirmed that the water met the required safety standards.

Alternative water supplies will remain available to affected residents while the restriction is in place.

The utility has not announced a specific time for the restoration of normal supply.

It said residents would receive an update once laboratory clearance had been obtained.
