The Marvel Cinematic Universe has just faced the shocking end of an era on Disney+. For years, fans only got to experience the MCU as a movie franchise made for the big screen. While Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Netflix's The Defenders Saga gave Marvel fans MCU or MCU-adjacent shows to watch amid those years, it was not until 2021, with the debut of Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany's WandaVision, that the era of MCU TV shows on Disney+ began. Since then, the streaming service has become the home of the MCU, including movies, live-action and animated series, shorts, and Special Presentations.

Disney+'s new October releases will see that bond continue through the release of Bettany's VisionQuest on October 14, bringing this chapter of the franchise full-circle, as the upcoming MCU series will mark the end of what Marvel Studios has called the WandaVision trilogy. Just before that happens, the MCU has had to face the end of an era, as its movies and TV shows on Disney+ just took a massive hit that came as an unexpected blow in a month when two major films, Spider-Man: Far From Home and Spider-Man: No Way Home, dropped on the streaming service.

The MCU Has Lost Its Hold On Disney+'s Top 10

For the first time in a long while, there are no MCU movies or TV shows on Disney+'s respective Top 10 charts in the United States. Yesterday, on Wednesday, September 16, Marvel Studios had two releases on Disney+'s Top 10 Movies chart nationwide. Those were Tom Holland's Spider-Man: No Way Home, at 7th, and Avengers: Age of Ultron one step above the Spider-Man movie, at 6th. Now, there are simply no MCU movies or TV shows anywhere on the streamer's charts. No Way Home was coming off a September 4 release on the streamer, as did Spider-Man: Far From Home.

That said, while the MCU might not have any release on Disney+'s charts in the US, the wider Marvel franchise does have two titles on Disney+'s Top 10 Movies chart nationwide. Those include one of the final movies in Sony's Spider-Man Universe, Aaron Taylor-Johnson's Kraven the Hunter, with the R-rated Spider-Man villain movie currently the 10th most-watched film on Disney+ in the United States, and Marvel's Wolverine Special Look Trailer, which is tied to Insomniac Games’ new Wolverine game for the PlayStation 5, currently at 6th. The MCU's surprising fall on Disney+'s streaming charts comes at a time when the franchise should be flying high.

It Comes At A Terrible Time For The Franchise

Instead of MCU releases losing steam on streaming, they should be popping off on Disney+, as Holland's Spider-Man: Brand New Day is currently at a massive box office total of $2.45 billion worldwide. It has become both the 3rd highest-grossing movie of all time, and the top performer in domestic box office history, leaving Star Wars: The Force Awakens behind. Additionally, Avengers: Doomsday will be released in theaters on December 18, a fact which should have been drawing interest in several previous MCU releases, including all four Avengers movies. As such, the MCU's latest Disney+ update comes at an awful time for the Marvel franchise.
