Two people are in a critical condition, with another injured in a stabbing outside a residence across the road from a south-east Melbourne primary school.

Paramedics responded to an incident at about 11.30am on Friday in which three people were injured, an Ambulance Victoria spokesperson said.

The incident occurred outside a house on Woodlee Street in Dandenong across the road from Dandenong North Primary School.

Two patients were transported to hospital in a critical condition, with another person was also taken to hospital, the spokesperson said.

The primary school was put into lockdown as a result of the stabbing.

Rena Mirra is the owner of CHD Charisse Hair Designers on David St, around the corner from Woodlea St.

Mirra said she and two others in the salon heard sirens.

One customer walked down to the site and said that a man was lying on the nature strip and was taken on a stretcher into an ambulance.

Mirra said David St was open but that Woodlee St was still closed off.

Police were door-knocking at nearby businesses and residences, she said.

The State Department of Education said it could not comment on the incident as it was a police matter.
