As the Q3 earnings season begins, investors are watching materials companies for insights into commodity demand, pricing trends, production costs and industrial activity.

Profitability remains an important metric as investors assess how companies across the sector are managing costs and generating returns amid changing market conditions.

Against that backdrop, below is a list of materials stocks that have earned A+, A or A- Profitability Grades under Seeking Alpha's Quant Rating system. The companies span several industries, including gold and copper mining, fertilizers, specialty chemicals, industrial gases and steel production.

AngloGold Ashanti plc (AU), Aura Minerals Inc. (AUGO), Newmont Corporation (NEM) and Southern Copper Corporation (SCCO) lead the list, each carrying an A+ Profitability Grade. Coeur Mining, Inc. (CDE), CF Industries Holdings, Inc. (CF), Freeport-McMoRan Inc. (FCX), Hecla Mining Company (HL) and The Sherwin-Williams Company (SHW) follow with A grades.

Rounding out the list are Albemarle Corporation (ALB), Avery Dennison Corporation (AVY), Ecolab Inc. (ECL), Nucor Corporation (NUE) and United States Lime & Minerals, Inc. (USLM), all of which have earned A- Profitability Grades. Together, the companies represent a range of materials subsectors, from metals and mining to chemicals, coatings and steel.

Seeking Alpha's Profitability Grade measures a company's ability to generate earnings and returns relative to its industry peers. The metric evaluates key financial indicators, including gross, operating and net profit margins, return on equity, return on assets and other efficiency measures.
