When did forecasters start taking this seriously?
The World Meteorological Organization has described the event as “supersizing before our eyes,” projecting it could become the strongest El Niño on record.
The Washington Post reports water temperatures are projected to peak around 4.1°C above average in December, roughly a full degree hotter than the previous record set during the 2015 El Niño.
How confident are forecasters that this continues?
The WMO now puts the likelihood of El Niño persisting through February 2027 at nearly 100%, the first time a WMO update has been this unequivocal.
NOAA separately estimates a greater than 90% chance the event stays “very strong” through the Northern Hemisphere’s fall and winter.

Where has El Niño already caused real damage?
Panama has been hit hard, with torrential rain and severe flooding affecting more than 15,600 people in its Caribbean and northern regions.
At the same time, a rainfall deficit in Panama’s central and metropolitan areas has caused water stress across eleven watersheds.
Globally, the UN’s World Food Programme has separately warned that nearly 50 million more people in vulnerable communities could be pushed into acute hunger because of the strengthening pattern.
