Pasig evacuates over 1,800 residents as habagat rains persist

MANILA, Philippines — A total of 1,845 people from 457 families were staying in evacuation centers in Pasig City as of 5:30 p.m. Monday, as the southwest monsoon, or habagat, continued to bring rain over Metro Manila.

The Pasig City Public Information Office said 14 evacuation centers across nine barangays were open and accommodating residents who had evacuated.

The evacuation centers were located in the following areas:

  • Bagong Ilog: Bagong Ilog Elementary School
  • Dela Paz: Karangalan Multipurpose Hall
  • Kapasigan: Kapasigan Sports Center Function Hall
  • Pinagbuhatan: Balsancat Covered Court; Damayan Covered Court
  • Maybunga: Maybunga Elementary School Annex; Westbank Community Center
  • Rosario: Bluegrass Multipurpose Hall
  • Santolan: Ilaya Covered Court; Santolan Elementary School; Santolan High School
  • Sta. Lucia: Sta. Lucia BLISS Multipurpose Hall; Countryside Multipurpose Hall
  • Ugong: Barangay Hall Parking Area

The city government also said an evacuation center at the Manggahan Multipurpose Hall had been pre-set up and placed on standby should the need arise to open it.

The city government likewise advised residents who need emergency assistance to call the Pasig City Emergency Hotline at (02) 8643-0000.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) meanwhile, said the southwest monsoon is expected to persist over Luzon and parts of the Visayas for the next five days. Metro Manila is also among the areas forecast to receive 50 to 100 millimeters of rainfall on Tuesday.

The state weather bureau warned that rainfall could be higher in mountainous and elevated areas and that the effects in some areas could be worsened by significant antecedent rainfall. /jpv
