Emmerdale confirms Sarah will turn against Charity in baby fallout

Emmerdale's biggest secret is finally out! In a huge cliffhanger, Charity Dingle has decided to tell her granddaughter Sarah Sugden the shocking truth about baby Leyla's true parentage.

A desperate Charity dropped the bombshell in the closing moments of Friday's episode (4 September) as she hoped to stop Sarah from handing herself in to the police over Dr Todd's death.

In the emotional fallout next week, Sarah's world is completely shattered as she processes Charity's revelation. Unable to tell her husband Jacob the truth, she feels totally alone.

As heartbreak turns to anger, will Charity now have to face Sarah's wrath on top of everything else she's had to deal with?

Here, Katie Hill – who plays Sarah – reveals the next chapter of this gripping soap saga…

Hi, Katie! How do you feel about such a big moment finally arriving for Sarah and Charity?

"I was just so excited to read the scripts. It's been a long-awaited moment for me and Emma [Atkins, who plays Charity] and certainly for the audience. I was definitely nervous because I knew how massive this moment was, but I couldn't wait to start filming. We knew we had to give it our best, and in the coming scenes, I think we really do."

Sarah has been through so much recently – how does this new bombshell affect things?

"Charity has been the one person by Sarah's side through all of this, right from the very beginning. To have this information come out now, it definitely makes her feel like her whole world has fallen apart. Their relationship has completely shifted."

What will this mean for Sarah's relationship as a mother to Leyla?

"It's a struggle. Initially, when she looks at Leyla after finding this out, she finds it hard to see past the truth. But the bond is so strong, and she has so much love for her. She won't let Charity take that away from her.

"Sarah definitely goes down the path of clinging to Leyla. She feels now, more than ever, that she needs to keep her close and not let anything get in the way of their relationship."

Charity has previously taken the blame for Dr Todd's death to protect her granddaughter, so does that make Sarah feel any softer towards her?

"As soon as Sarah finds out, I don't think she considers going softer on Charity just because she took the blame. If anything, it makes her suspect that Charity did that knowing it might soften the blow if the truth ever came out. It doesn't work. It makes Sarah see red."

So is the betrayal too big to forgive?

"In Sarah's eyes, this is the end. I don't think she believes she will ever be able to forgive her. The dynamic between the two characters has shifted completely. Sarah is taking charge now, and while it's obviously devastating for Charity, Sarah just can't see a way past this.

"From this moment on, as awful as it sounds, Charity is essentially dead to her. She doesn't want Charity to have anything to do with her or Leyla. Sarah is setting very strict boundaries – Charity is nothing to her now."

Could there be vengeance to come?

"I won't give too much away, but Sarah is not messing around. She wants Charity to face the consequences. We'll see Sarah struggle, but she's determined to make sure things go according to her plan. It's going to be a very difficult time for Charity."

Is Sarah worried that Ross might step in to claim Leyla?

"Definitely. Even if Ross says he doesn't want anything to do with her right now, it will always be in the back of her mind that he could change his mind one day. Sarah is trying to block that out but it's a constant worry."

There's also Jacob, who still doesn't know that Sarah killed Dr Todd…

"That's why Sarah won't tell Jacob about Leyla initially – she's terrified of losing him and their little family. Watching him have those happy moments as a father to Leyla while she harbours this truth is agonising. She's holding it all in and it's a difficult burden to carry."

It sounds like Sarah is going to struggle massively…

"100%. Sarah is a strong character – she's gone through so much and she's good at keeping a level head and saying, 'This is the situation, and I need to take charge'. But while she's trying to power through, she's clearly struggling on the inside. She just wants to get through it."
